The Hungarian Parliament on Caricatures (1867-1989)

Political caricature has been a popular genre of press in recent decades. The caricatures give an entertaining, often greatly exaggerated - but by no means complete - impression of the opinions formed about the political systems, characters and culture of debate of different ages. They highlight the problems that have often been present for decades, they present the functioning of the parliament, focusing on crises, anomalies and scandals, but they also provide an insight into the more peaceful everyday life of the House. In our book, we look for answers to questions about how a candidate could get into Parliament according to the mockery. What are the rules that bind your work, and what are the opinions of cartoonists about them? How was Parliament and the work going on there portrayed? Which political scandals appeared in the drawings? What role did women play in humorous images of parliament? In our volume, we present more than three hundred and fifty of the Hungarian political caricatures from 1867 to 1989, published in press products related to parliamentary work and parliamentarism.
