Who was my Big Thötö? The Jesuit director of one of the most successful Catholic movements of the last century? A church diplomat who in 1945-1946 escaped across borders and brought news between Rome and Hungary, the Vatican, the Soviets and the Hungarian Catholic Church? Or an Argentinian Hungarian freemason named Alejandro Nagy Varga, who participated in the survey of slums in Buenos Aires and in the social mission of the South American Church? Is Nánt a man with a mission, seeking laurels as a writer, who tried to mediate between the Catholic Church and Freemasonry with his book "Jesuits and Freemasons"? Perhaps an agent of the communist Hungarian state security operating under the pseudonyms "Sándor Kőműves" and "Franz Kirchenbauer", who proved his left-wing commitment to his guards until his death in 1979? Or was it someone else, maybe all at the same time? Our volume is the first attempt to tell the life story of Töhötöm Nagy, rich in twists and turns. The unity of this exceptional life path is not given by the permanence and self-identity of the title character's personality, but paradoxically by the permanence of change. This is how the great shape-shifter, Nagy Töhötöm, will become a characteristic representative of the 20th century in the relationship between individual and history.
